Painting and Drawing 1-2
Fall semester final review
What to know for the final in Drawing and Painting 1-2
First think about what we have done and remember where we started.
We began with carefully looking at form. Which side of our brain did we use to observe objects better? What was it called when we drew without looking at the paper? What is the art term for outer edge?
We then worked with the quality of line.
You will need to show me the difference between hatch and crosshatch marks. You will also need to use hatch marks to show different values. What is value?
I showed you the rule of halves for drawing a face. What is a good shape for a face? Where exactly do the eyes go in relationship to the top and bottom of the face? How wide does the mouth reach? Where do I put the ears? How wide are the shoulders?
Next we worked on value.
What is my favorite expression that explains the exaggerated contrast when a light value meets a dark value at an edge? Be able to shade a cube and a rounded object. What is it called when light bends around a rounded object? When do you have a gradual transition, and when do you create an edge? According to me can there be outlines in finished value shading work?
Then came perspective
You need to know the rules of the two types of perspective. Which can have lines parallel to the horizon line, 1 point or 2 point. Bonus question: Think back to my explanations of Escher’s work. Most of his impossible drawings were done in a special viewpoint. Can you tell me where his horizon line was (high, middle, or low on the page)? Extra bonus if you can tell me the actual term used to describe the viewpoint. You will be asked to draw a perspective drawing so review your notes so you are sharp. Expect to draw: a series of 4 arched doorways in one point perspective, the 2-point box trick, and stairs in 2 point perspective.
Contrast of different values is key to make forms separate and give the visual interest needed to make people want to check out your work. Be ready to use the edge rule to create contrast with shading and eliminate outlines.
What I expect is that you have all learned this semester and I want you to prove it in our final. The final is going to weigh about 15% of your semester grade so do yourself a favor and review all of your notes. It will be easy if you do but…take it seriously.
