Carol Aust: Bay Area Figurative Artist
Fresh out of college during my first year teaching in San Jose, I went to the open studios in Hunters Point. When I saw Carol's work, I instantly fell in love with her fun, colorful, and insightful work. She is an amazing visual story teller. Her work often engages the mind with questions about the subject matter. Sometimes you see her painting and wonder about how the story continues. Her figures seem to be struggling with things that we can all identify with. When I see her work I am amazed at how easily I create the story I imagine the figure is going through.
It was an honor to meet Carol nearly 20 years ago, and to find out she has a BFA from Chico as well is a great connection. With the following slide show see how she uses the figure to connect with the audience. How she engages you with the simple trick of giving us figures whose story is not yet finished and we wonder how their story continues. See how she uses color and is wonderfully painterly in her execution. The images from this slide show are older, to see her most recent work check out her website: http://www.carolaust.com
